Shimauma salon is hosting a new event called 『TOYONOAKARI*・métier』on Yamato Kotoba, the native language of Japan.
In this monthly lecture series, we will get a closer look at the root of the current Japanese language in order to better understand the peculiar characteristics of the Japanese culture, customs and ideology.
A seasonal theme will illustrate each month’s get-together, where we will practice the kotodama** in a relaxed atmosphere.

The first lecture was on September 9th (Chrysanthemum day). We listened attentively to lecturer Hideyuki Shishido’s deep stories (September theme included : Kikku no sekku*** , harvest moon, equinoctial week, ◯△□’s iconology) while drinking sake with floating chrysanthemum petals to celebrate Chrysanthemum day.

This month’s lecture will happen on October 7th, and the main theme will be Ise Jingu.

If you would like to take part in this event, please send a mail to salon@shima-uma.co.jp with the title “TOYONOAKARI” and the following information > your full name, number of participants and contact number.

—————————————————————————————————————-

*Toyonoakari :  the banquet that happens after the festival rituals at the Imperial Court.

**Kotodama  :  the spiritual power that is contained within words, but also refers to the conception that spiritual power can be manifested through the intonation of words. This is explained as an aspect of animism, or alternatively is explained from the perspective of its function as influencing a person’s mind. There is also the view that this way of thinking is one of the special characteristics that define Japanese culture.   (- Yonei Teruyoshi  from the Encyclopedia of Shinto)

***Kikku no sekku (Chrysanthemum Day) is one of the five ancient sacred festivals of Japan. It is celebrated on the 9th day of the 9th month. It was started in 910, when the Japanese imperial court held its first chrysanthemum show. Chrysanthemums are the symbol of the Imperial House of Japan.
